Traveling Tips for Your Medically Complex Child

In this article, RSVP Home Care – conveniently located in Covington, Kentucky (KY) – is here to provide you with travel tips, so you can make traveling with your medically complex child less stressful for everyone.

Traveling with medically complex children is not an easy task. However, planning ahead of time can help make the process easier. Whether you are traveling by plane or car, there are several things you can do to make the journey less stressful for your child.

Before your flight, you should first prepare your child for the experience. There are several books available that will introduce them to flying and provide them with a visual representation, so they can gain a better understanding. You can also show them videos of airplanes, as well. Visiting the airport can be useful, too. This would allow your child to see the planes in action and experience the atmosphere of the airport. Utilizing these tips will prevent your son or daughter from experience sensory overload when it is time to fly.

For longer flights, it may be beneficial to schedule a flight that includes a stopover. This would give your child a chance to stretch out after sitting for a lengthy period of time. You should also try to book your flight at a time that your child is most relaxed. Most find it helpful to fly in the mornings as the child is not tired, and the airport is less busy. Make sure to speak with your child’s physician beforehand as a letter from the doctor detailing the child’s condition may provide your child with special accommodations such as a change of seats or an upgrade.  If you are traveling with any medical equipment, make sure to call the airlines you are using to ensure that all the devices comply with their guidelines.

If you are traveling with special needs children by vehicle, you might want to sit in the backseat with them. This allows you to keep an eye on your child without having to constantly turn to look at them from the passenger seat. Sitting next to them also gives you the ability to give your child items they need during the ride. If your child would be more content lying down instead of sitting, there is a seatbelt that safely and legally allows them to do so. The E-Z-ON Modified Vest for Medical Transport is a great option if you are worried about your child’s comfort during a long car trip.

No matter the type of transportation, make sure to bring a bag full of toys and devices to keep your child entertained. An iPad, books, and coloring books are just some ways to help your son or daughter pass the time. These forms of distraction will keep your child from becoming overwhelmed during the travel.
