CHAMP Camp provides a week-long (5 day), overnight outdoor
camping experience annually to children between the ages of 6-18 who have
tracheostomies or require technological assistance, including the use of
ventilators. Counselors have a two day orientation at the camp facility
prior to the arrival of the campers. CHAMP Camp is currently held at
Recreation Unlimited in Ashley, Ohio.
 |
The mission of CHAMP Camp is to promote the recreational and
educational benefits of outdoor living; and to encourage citizenship,
spiritual awareness, and fellowship within a camp setting. It is also
a time for campers to be independent from families, a valuable and important
step in growing up. CHAMP Camp was started in 1991, and we are looking
forward to celebrating our 11th summer of camping this year! |
 |
Adolescents who are over the age of 15 may opt to
participate in an additional adventure, the CHAMP Camp Adolescent Retreat,
which is a three day weekend getaway. The Adolescent Retreat is held
at Timberpointe Outdoor Center in Hudson, Illinois. |
 |
Campers have traveled from a twelve state region to
participate; including the states of Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin,
Missouri, Iowa, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, and Maryland. |
 |
At CHAMP Camp, no one sits on the sidelines and no one is
different. Their program is rich with traditional activities and
physical challenges. |
 |
The camping experience is staffed by 2.5 volunteers per
camper for a good mix of caring and sharing. The majority of
counselors are professional medical clinicians who believe in the spirit of
camp and enjoy the outdoor environment. Their medical expertise is on
the forefront, yet remains understated. |
 |
No camper is turned away because of family's inability to
contribute to the cost of camp. |
